Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

What is ESWT?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves (shockwaves) to promote healing and reduce pain. The shockwaves are delivered through the skin to targeted areas of the body, helping to stimulate tissue repair and improve blood flow.

Conditions Treated with ESWT?

Various musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Tendonitis  (tennis elbow, Achilles, etc..)
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Patellar Tendinopathy
  • Non-Union Fractures (bone healing problems)
  • Rotator Cuff Tendonitis

If you think this therapy might benefit you, give our office a call. Before your first treatment, Dr. Walther will do an evaluation to determine if Shockwave Therapy is appropriate for you.

Benefits of ESWT

  1. Non-Invasive: No need for surgery or injections. A simple gel is applied to the targeted area to help the shockwaves penetrate the skin.
  2. Minimal Recovery Time: Patients typically return to normal activities after treatment.
  3. Pain Relief: Effective in reducing chronic pain and inflammation.
  4. Improved Mobility: Encourages tissue regeneration and improved joint function.
  5. Quick Treatment: Each session generally lasts between 10 to 20 minutes.

How Many ESWT Sessions Are Needed?

Most patients typically require 3 to 10 ESWT sessions spaced about 1 week apart. The exact number of sessions depends on the severity of the condition and the individual's response to treatment.

Potential Side Effects

Mild Pain or Discomfort: Some light discomfort during or after treatment.

Redness or Swelling: The treated area may feel slightly tender.

Bruising: In some cases, mild bruising may occur, but it typically resolves in a few days.

Temporary Numbness: Some patients experience a tingling or numbness sensation post-treatment.

The treatment can be modified in real time to accommodate your tolerance level.

Is ESWT Effective?

Studies have shown that ESWT can be highly effective for various musculoskeletal conditions, especially when other treatments (such as physical therapy or medication) have not provided sufficient relief. It is safe and non-invasive.
